Description
I rolled out a slab of clay and pressed it into a plaster mould. I then turned it out and decorated the inside and rim, extending the pattern part way down the outside. I used a grey engobe slip for the background colour and a paper resist to block out the tulips, utilising the natural white colour of the clay. For the outside I used a purple and scratched out the design revealing the white clay body underneath. This technique is called sgraffitto. I then fired it, glazed it with a gloss glaze, leaving the purple body unglazed and fired it again. To finish I waxed and buffed the unglazed section.
The inspiration for this design came from tulips growing in my garden.
