Description
Handmade using white earthenware clay and decorated using a combination of coloured engobe slips (liquid clay that will fire and stick onto the body of the pot without the need of being covered with glaze) and oxides. Finished using a combination of an earthenware gloss glaze, (coloured or transparent) and unglazed areas which are sometimes waxed. To build this vase I used a plaster press mould, coils for the neck and foot ring and slabs for the body. For the base colour I painted on a pale green after which I sponged on the stripes in varying shades of green and finishing off with a dark olive green applied using an edging tool. The neck and top of the vase are covered in several layers of red slip and the “pips” painted on using a small mop brush. The interior and the top section have been glazed. My inspiration as the title suggests comes from a watermelon.
