Description
Handmade using white earthenware clay and decorated using a combination of coloured engobe slips (liquid clay that will fire and stick onto the body of the pot without the need of being covered with glaze) and oxides. Finished using a combination of an earthenware gloss glaze, (coloured or transparent) and unglazed areas which are sometimes waxed. To build this vase I used a plaster press mould, coils for the neck and foot ring and slabs for the body. To decorate I painted several layers of yellow onto the body first, then I painted on some segments around the neck with a darker yellow. I then scratched out some texture on the body of the pot. I glazed the inside of the pot and dabbed on small dots of glaze over the sgraffito areas.
My inspiration came from a lemon. The darker sections around the neck illustrate the segments shown when the lemon is cut in two and the sgraffito and glazed dots on the outside of the pot illustrates the pitted peel.
