Whale in the Deep

Large Earthenware clay dish, colored Dark Blue with a picture of a whale, hand painted on the inside.

I rolled out the clay, decorated it and then flipped it and pressed it onto my plaster hump mould. I made the foot ring by rolling out a small coil (sausage) of clay and smoothing it onto the dish.I used a variety of blue engobe slips to paint the sea. I masked out the whale using paper, once the background was finished, I peeled off the paper to reveal the bare clay, which I then painted using a fine brush for the detail. The inside is glazed, the outside is not.
